Why Light Sensitivity Is a Migraine Signal, Not Just a Symptom
I used to think I was just squinting a lot. Bright rooms, sunny afternoons, fluorescent office lights — I'd power through with slightly narrowed eyes and assume everyone felt the same way. It took an embarrassingly long time to realize that what I was experiencing wasn't normal sensitivity. It was a migraine warning signal I had completely learned to ignore.
Light sensitivity — the clinical term is photophobia — is one of the most common migraine symptoms and triggers, and it works in both directions. Why migraines and light sensitivity are connected
The trigeminal nerve, which is heavily involved in migraine pain, has direct connections to the visual processing centers in the brain. When a migraine is active, those pathways become hypersensitive — meaning light that would normally be completely tolerable suddenly feels overwhelming.
But it goes further than that. For a lot of people, certain types of light can actually trigger a migraine before the pain even begins. The same nerve pathways that become reactive during a migraine can be set off by the right kind of light stimulus, especially blue light from screens.
Why screens hit differently than sunlight
Most people assume that bright sunlight would be the worst offender. It's not always. The issue isn't just brightness — it's wavelength.
Blue light, the kind emitted by phones, laptops, and tablets, scatters more in the eye than warmer wavelengths. That scattering strains the same nerve pathways involved in migraine onset in a way that even brighter but warmer light doesn't always replicate. It's why you can sit outside on a mildly overcast afternoon and feel fine, then spend two hours on a laptop and end up with a migraine by evening.
Screen brightness matters less than most people think. The wavelength is the more important variable.
Screens before bed and the sleep connection
There's a second layer to the screen problem that most people miss entirely. Blue light before bed suppresses melatonin production, which delays and disrupts deep sleep. And as anyone managing migraines already knows, poor sleep raises migraine risk significantly the next day.
So the pattern ends up looking like this: screens late at night, disrupted sleep, migraine the next morning — and the connection back to the screen use from twelve hours earlier is easy to miss entirely if you're not tracking it.
What I started tracking once I understood this
I added a simple field to my daily entries: screen time in the two hours before bed, and whether I was in bright or fluorescent light for an extended stretch during the day. It took about three weeks before a pattern became undeniable. High screen time before bed correlated with next-morning migraines at a rate I couldn't explain away.
That's the thing about light sensitivity — it feels like a symptom, so most people only track it during a migraine. Tracking it as a potential input, not just an output, is where the useful information actually lives.
