My Migraine Toolkit — The 3 Things I Never Go Without
If you deal with migraines, you already know the drill. One minute you're fine, the next you're hunting for a dark room, pressing your hands against your temples, and canceling everything you had planned for the day.
I spent years just surviving migraines. Popping ibuprofen, lying in bed, waiting it out. It wasn't until I actually started paying attention — really paying attention — that things started to shift.
Here's what changed everything for me, and the three things that are now permanently in my migraine toolkit.
1. A Migraine Tracker Journal
This was the biggest game changer and I wish I had started sooner.
I had no idea what was triggering my migraines. I blamed stress, then the weather, then my diet — but I was just guessing. When I started logging every attack — what I ate, how I slept, the weather, my stress levels, my hydration, my hormones — patterns started showing up within weeks.
Turns out red wine was a major trigger for me. So was poor sleep the night before. I never would have connected those dots without writing them down consistently.
The journal I use tracks everything in one place: pain level, location of pain, potential triggers, medications taken, how long the attack lasted, and a notes section for anything else. It also has monthly summary pages which made my doctor appointments way more productive. Instead of saying "I've been getting a lot of headaches," I could show her exactly what was happening and when.
If you only do one thing on this list, make it this. Tracking is the foundation everything else is built on.

2. A Migraine Relief Ice Cap
When a migraine hits, cold therapy is one of the fastest non-medication options available. I used to just press a bag of frozen peas against my head, which worked okay but was awkward and melted fast.
The ice cap I switched to wraps around your entire head and applies consistent cooling pressure — which is exactly what you want during an attack. It also blocks out light completely, which is a lifesaver because light sensitivity is one of the worst parts of a bad migraine day.
What I like about it:
- You can use it hot or cold depending on what your migraine responds to
- It stays in place so you're not constantly adjusting it
- Drug-free, so you can use it on top of whatever medication routine you already have
- It's reusable, so the cost per use is basically nothing over time
I keep mine in the freezer so it's ready whenever I need it. On bad days it's the first thing I reach for before anything else.

3. A Time-Marked Water Bottle
This one sounds too simple to make a difference. It's not.
Dehydration is one of the most common migraine triggers and also one of the most overlooked. Most people don't realize they're dehydrated until they already have a headache — and by then you're playing catch-up.
The reason I struggled to stay hydrated wasn't laziness, it was that I had no visual reminder throughout the day. Once I switched to a bottle with time markers on the side showing where the water level should be at 8am, noon, 4pm, and 8pm, my daily intake went up significantly without me having to think about it.
The one I use is 32oz, BPA-free, comes with a straw lid, and is big enough that I only need to refill it once a day to hit my goal. Small thing, real difference.

Putting It Together
None of these things alone is a cure. Migraines are complicated and everyone's triggers are different. But having a system — tracking your patterns, being ready when an attack hits, and staying ahead of dehydration — makes a real difference over time.
Start with the journal. Once you know your triggers, everything else gets easier.
If any of these helped you or if you have something in your own toolkit that works, drop it in the comments. Migraine sufferers look out for each other.
