10 Signs Your Migraines Are Trying to Tell You Something (What I Finally Learned)
10 Signs Your Migraines Are Trying to Tell You Something (What I Finally Learned)
For the longest time, I thought my migraines just “randomly” showed up.
One minute I’d be fine… the next, I’d have that pressure building in my head, and I knew my day was about to be ruined.
But over time — especially dealing with them during work — I started noticing something:
My body was warning me before the migraine actually hit.
I just wasn’t paying attention.
Now that I’ve been tracking things more closely, I can see the patterns clearly. And honestly, catching these signs early has made a huge difference.
Here are the biggest signs I’ve noticed — and what I do now when they show up.
1. That Light Head Pressure
This is usually the first sign for me.
It’s not a full migraine yet — just a slight pressure, almost like something is “off.”
I used to ignore this completely. Big mistake.
What I do now:
As soon as I feel this, I stop what I’m doing and check in — did I eat? drink water? take a break?
2. Neck Tightness
My neck and upper shoulders start getting tight before a migraine hits.
At first I thought it was just from work or posture, but it’s actually one of my biggest warning signs.
What I do now:
Stretch, move around, and don’t stay locked in one position too long.
3. Feeling Weirdly Tired
This one took me a while to figure out.
I’ll feel drained for no reason — even if I got enough sleep.
Now I know: this is my body slowing down before a migraine.
4. Brain Fog
I’ll start forgetting little things or feel like I’m not fully focused.
Almost like I’m on autopilot.
This used to frustrate me — now I recognize it as a signal.
5. Sensitivity to Light
Lights start feeling a little too bright… even before the pain starts.
This is a big one.
What I do now:
If I can, I dim lights or give my eyes a break immediately.
6. Irritability or Mood Changes
I’ll get annoyed faster or just feel “off.”
Didn’t realize this was connected at first, but it definitely is.
7. Food Cravings or Hunger
This one is huge for me.
A lot of times, that head pressure is actually my body telling me I need food.
When I ignore it… the migraine usually follows.
8. Slight Numbness or Tingling
I’ve had moments where I feel tingling in my arm or face.
That’s actually one of the things that made me take this more seriously.
9. Increased Sensitivity to Movement
Even normal movement starts to feel a little uncomfortable.
Driving, walking — things just feel “off.”
10. That “Here It Comes” Feeling
If you deal with migraines, you know exactly what I mean.
It’s hard to explain… but you just KNOW.
What I Do Now (This Changed Everything)
Once I notice 2–3 of these signs, I don’t wait anymore.
I go straight into what I call my migraine prevention routine:
Drink water immediately
Eat something small (even if I’m not super hungry)
Take a short break if possible
Reduce light and stimulation
And if I’m at work or out, I make sure I have a few things with me that help:
A cold/cooling mask
Water bottle
Quick snack
These small things have honestly made a big difference in stopping migraines from getting worse.
Why Tracking This Matters
The biggest shift for me was starting to track everything.
Before that, it felt random.
Now I can actually see:
When symptoms start
What triggers them
What helps stop them
And that control makes a huge difference.
- Drink water
- Eat something small (this one is huge for me)
- Step away or take a quick break if I can
- Try to reduce light and noise
If I ignore these early signs, the migraine almost always gets worse.
What I Keep With Me (Especially at Work)
Since I deal with this a lot during work, I always try to have a few things with me:
- Something cold for my head or eyes
- Water
- A quick snack
It’s simple, but it makes a difference.
Final Thoughts
Migraines don’t just come out of nowhere.
Your body is usually trying to warn you — you just have to learn how to listen.
I’m still figuring it out myself, but even catching them a little earlier has helped more than I expected.
If you deal with migraines too, start paying attention to those small signs.
It might change everything for you like it did for me.
